SaferTech is delighted that California is officially releasing Guidelines to Reducing Exposure to RF radiation and using your cellphone safely. This is, after all, what SaferTech is all about.

Cellphones are supposed to make our lives easy.  We have videos, articles and solutions to help you make safe cell phone use easy. Two of our favorites are at the end of this story.

We advocate what’s referred to as the Precautionary Principle. Basically, this means that because there’s research, lots of it actually, saying the energy that powers our cellphones–called radio frequency or RF radiation– could be causing health concerns-including tumors and cancer, then we ought to take care when using our cellphones and use them mindfully.

Reduce Cellphone Radiation California say Cellphones May Cause CancerThe announcement goes on to say–and this is SO important:

Don’t rely on a “radiation shield” or other products claiming to block RF energy, electromagnetic fields or radiation from cellphones.  According to the US Federal Trade Commission, products that interfere with the phones signal may force it to work harder and emit more RF energy to stay connected, possibly increasing your exposure.

YES.  It’s true.  We’ve personally tested anti-radiation shields, discs and  anti-radiation fabrics and we do not recommend them. We’ve used our meters on various forms of “radiation-stoppers” and we measure an increase in RF radiation levels from cellphones where the protective material “ends”.  The meters demonstrate a magnification of cellphone or smartphone energy around the perimeter of shield.  Although, we may see reduced levels of RF radiation with some cellphone cases, we want to make sure people realize that when the phone is on and using signal or searching for signal, there is RF radiation emitted from the device. That’s how a cellphone works.

Cellphone Distance is the Key to Safe Cellphone Use

The further you are from your cellphone, the less RF radiation or energy you’re exposed to.  That’s why The State of California Health Department guidelines recommend:

    1. Keep it out of your pockets, bra’s and holsters.  Yes, all good points.  But . . .

The recommendation of carrying your cellphone in  purse, backpack, briefcase or man-bag needs a bit or precaution: Purses and briefcases and backpacks do not stop RF radiation.  The RF energy dissipates with distance-but the radiation plume or “spray” is pretty thick even 3 or 4 inches from your phone. Check out our demonstration video . So, please be sure the phone in the purse, backpack, briefcase etc–isn’t up against or close to your body.

Use the Speaker Mode when talking

When on speaker mode, best to be graceful and not do this in public.  We all pretty much know this now. But, do we all realize that if we’re holding the phone, we’re a part of our body is being exposed to cellphone radiation?

We like something to keep our phones away from our bodies, even on speaker. Sometimes we hold the flap of a cellphone case or hold the phone by straps attached to the case.  Sometimes we put the cellphone on the desk, night-stand, kitchen counter-whatever.  We try and be mindful that the radiation doesn’t stop just because the phone is on speaker.

Use a Wired Headset

But be aware not all wired headsets actually prevent the RF radiation from going to your head . . .  This concept may be hard to grasp, but true. We’ve measured with our meters and usually the higher quality headsets are better, but even the California guidelines caution:

Remove Headsets  from Ears when Not using the cellphone

Because small amounts of radiation are released from headsets even when you’re not using the phone. Almost always true. Same holds for earbuds and headphones.

Some headsets work better than others to prevent RF energy.

Fortunately, there’s one type of headset technology that can stop RF radiation from traveling through the wires up to your head.  It’s called Air Tube technology and it was patented 20 years ago.

Here’s how it works

It’s pretty simple actually. That RF energy coming from the phone could travel up the wires of a headset–but with the hollow “air tube” that energy is stopped, dead in its tracks, where the wire meets the tube. Only air and sound flow through that tube and in this case, the sound is amplified very nicely in the tube.

Loving wellness as we do, we’ve understood and appreciated the extra protection that air-tube wired headsets give us from EMF and RF energy, but up until now, the air-tubes we tried were flimsy, they broke easily,  didn’t look good, had a microphone issue or messed with our cellphones causing intermittent service interruption.

Best Place to Put The WiFi for Health and Safety

Does it matter where I put my WiFi?

You may think of those WiFi Routers that are everywhere as harmless, but research is showing if we care about our health, placement of the WiFi router is super important.  WiFi makes our lives easier in a world fueled by technology, but easier isn’t necessarily better!

So how can we protect ourselves? By putting space between you and your router. The distance a WiFi signal travels is dependent upon the signal strength of the router so power matters too.

Best Place to Put WiFi: Distance is Everything

Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF) are invisible. You can’t see them, touch them or feel them, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there.  As awareness about possible negative effects of wireless energy grows, there’s even more curiosity.  I think that’s why more and more people ask me how far they need to be and where the best placement of WiFi Routers are for health and safety. As I demonstrate in the video, you can see that with this router, I am exposed to about 100 times more Radio Frequency (RF) energy when I’m next to the router versus standing 20 feet away.

This measurement video, like the others on Safertech,  give you an example of the varying levels of energy coming from our WiFi Routers.  If I was using the same meter on say, your WiFi, the measurements could vary widely.  The point is to demonstrate that there is RF Radiation being emitted and the meters allow you to see—and in some cases hear the energy.  

If we can put a safe distance between our WiFi routers with correct placement in our living space, we are less likely to have physical impacts from the EMF(s) coming from our WiFi routers,  smartphones and computers.  Studies show that EMF can pass through walls, and so it’s important to be mindful that we are not only exposed to the signal from our routers, but from the wireless networks of neighbors and local businesses. All these wireless networks emit EMF that pose potential health risks that range from fertility to insomnia to headaches to tumors.

“Safe” Exposure Level?

For me, the less the better.  I feel best when peak levels in my environment are below 1. Micro-Watts per square centimeter.  Video Recap:

Electromagnetic energy and how it effects our body’s energy is a complicated subject.

The average level of RF radiation energy in your home depends on how many devices, the type of devices, proximity to cellphone towers and of course, if your devices are powered on.  You can lower the levels by turning off WiFi, Bluetooth, printers, Smart Meters your cellphone and any wireless devices.

You Have The Power

Now for more good news; there are many different options to reduce exposure:

Turn Off WiFi Before Bed: Use this simple switch so you don’t have to get close the Router! It’s as important as WiFi Router placement. The simple step of hitting the off switch can lead to a better night’s sleep. When on, a WiFi signal may interfere with our brains during sleep, so by turning it off we reduce exposure and hopefully rest more deeply.

Don’t worry about WiFi Router placement: Simply hard-wire! The truth is that giving up WiFi is the best option. Though this may be hard with work, we can easily protect ourselves at home by using Ethernet cables that hard-wire in—they also provide faster and more reliable internet connections.

Set Your Phone to Airplane Mode: Yes, cell phones and tablets emit EMF when our receivers are turned on. Setting our devices to airplane mode reduces the exposure dramatically as these devices tend to remain close to our bodies. 

Add Negative Ions: Exposure to WiFi can result in the build up of positive ions that can have negative effects on our bodies. We can neutralize this by adding negative ions, take a walk along the beach, or purchase a negative ion generator.

Teen Anxiety and Depression is Linked to Cell Phones

A study in the Journal of Childhood Development that came out Summer 2017 has made the connection and the study really focuses on night use of screens.

This makes sense to us at SaferTech–and not just because the kids are actively texting, going on social media and not getting to bed–but because of the screens themselves.

Not just because you’re texting or reading—but because of the wavelengths of blue light they’re emitting.

Night-Time Screen Use Isn’t Just For Teens . . . Right?

This blue light actually can suppress production of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin. You might ask, well, doesn’t the TV have the same blue light? Well, yes it does, but Dr.’s feel the effect is more pronounced because we hold our devices so close to our faces and step up the exposure. Bright blue light can also affect our circadian rhythms, our internal clock—something that’s being talked about a lot lately as a really important key to our health and well-being. Turns out that bright lights in the evening hours can throw off your body clock, confusing your brain into thinking it’s still daytime.

The best way to avoid the blue light from suppressing your melatonin production or changing your circadian rhythms is to cut back on using your phones, computers or iPads at night. The National Sleep Foundation Recommends powering down all devices 2 hours before bed OR you can try wearing these blue-blocking orange glasses when it gets dark.

And The Studies Say . . .

There’s been a couple of studies done about the efficacy of wearing them. One study(see Research tab below)  from 2014 shows that teenagers who wore orange tinted glasses a few hours before sleep were significantly sleepier when they wore the glasses.

We’ve been using them around the office (after 4pm is the best time to start) and lots of people on the team tell me that their eyes simply feel more relaxed as they look at computer screens.  I should mention, blue light stimulates your brain–which is a good thing in the morning and afternoon.  The real issue here is to avoid the blue light in the evening and at night!

I offer these on SaferTech.com. If you want to try the orange glasses, make sure you’re getting glasses that have been tested for their blue blocking abilities and one more thing: Leaving these devices on at night while you’re asleep can add to the problem. Some research has shown that our eyes can detect blue light even through closed eyelids, resulting in suppression of melatonin production. So don’t leave them on in your bedroom, turn them off or leave them somewhere else.

Also, when you turn on a light at night, you immediately send your brain misinformation about the light-dark cycle. The only thing your brain interprets light to be is day. Believing daytime has arrived, your biological clock instructs your pineal gland to immediately cease its production of melatonin.

Whether you have the light on for an hour or for just a second, the effect is the same — and your melatonin pump doesn’t turn back on when you flip the light back off.

What is an EMF?

What is an EMF?

 

Electromagnetic Frequencies (also known as EMFs) are the train tracks of the information age.  They are invisible, information carrying radio waves that can travel long distances and link us to the digital world.  Radio signals Smart phones, laptops and wi-fi access points are the most common examples of products using this technology.

For years, scientists, and people who find themselves sensitive to exposure to EMF’s, have debated whether or not this radiation is harmful–or harmless.   While the electronics industry can point to a number of studies that conclude that EMF’s are completely benign, The World Health Organization recently classified EMFs as a Possible Carcinogen.

Should you be worried about the EMF exposure that you and your family get every day?  That’s obviously your decision.  Just like there were people who decided early on that cigarettes were dangerous–long before the rest of the world–you’re most likely here because you’re concerned and want to know more about EMF’s.  This article will give you an overview, based on our 20 years of studying this subject.

There are three kinds of EMFs:

  1. Electric fields
  2. Magnetic fields
  3. Non-ionizing Radiofrequency

 

Our main concern at Safertech is non-ionizing radiofrequency – usually shortened to “RF” – the kind of energy associated with wireless communications.

 

The Science

 

Interesting fact:  Every being on Earth creates its own (small) EMF field. But that’s nothing compared to the radiation generated by the billions of electronic devices we have deployed over the last few decades.  These devices  radiate EMF’s at varying frequencies and corresponding wavelengths.  More and  more scientists believe that when our human bodies are bombarded by the EMF fields emitted by wireless devices, they overlap and interact–often in not healthy ways. These outside EMFs are wildly different from the ones in our bodies.  When they intersect, it can actually change the naturally-occurring frequencies in our body into frequencies that can cause what scientists call “unhealthy pathology” – i.e. cellular/tissue damage.

This is especially true when the device in question is so physically close to you that it generates heat in your body.  Have you ever held a smart phone next to your head and felt your ear get warm?  How about your laptop heating up your lap?  That’s a clear sign that radiation is entering your body and changing your biological material.  This is especially troubling for children who spend more and more time with screens at younger and younger ages.  They are more susceptible because their brains and organs are not fully developed.  What about exposure that doesn’t generate heat?  Because you’re surrounded all the time by all kinds of RF.  Science doesn’t completely understand this, however, as we noted earlier, there is enough evidence and concern that the World Health Organization has classified radio frequency electromagnetic radiation as Group 2B – possibly carcinogenic. At this point, we think it’s best to air on the side of caution.   Safertech recommends that you follow the precautionary principle. The precautionary principle (or precautionary approach) Precaution may be defined as “caution in advance,” “caution practiced in the context of uncertainty,” or informed prudence – an expression of a need by decision-makers to anticipate harm before it occurs.

Clearly the best course of action is taking responsibility and making your own decisions, taking action you deem appropriate.  The actions might include simple things, like putting your smart phone in “airplane” mode when you’re not actively using it, using a headset and keeping the phone away from body and being aware of wifi access points in your home and office.

Turns out, Laptops are not approved for . . . Laps!

Technology’s Best-Kept Secret

A laptop is better kept off your lap! Because of the Electromagnetic Field(EMF)-particularly Radio Frequency or emissions of laptop RF radiation-we say not laps–And because of thermal safety the FCC says keep them 8″ away.

Simply put, laptops are not tested for safety on laps. The FCC regulation clearly states:

“Mobile devices are transmitters designed to be used in such a way that a separation distance of at least 20 centimeters is normally maintained between the transmitter’s radiating structure(s) and the body of the user or nearby persons.”  –FCC BULLETIN 65

So, if you are using them on your lap, you are technically being a non-compliant consumer (Oh my! Tsk, Tsk!)  This exceeds the federal guideline for exposure (and you risk being burned). But how would you know? This information is buried DEEP in your user manual. We touch on this hidden but important info in our Stylus video. Check it out here!

WiFi Dangers and Your Body

A recent study show significant changes indicating DNA damage of sperm in rat testes when closely exposed to RF Radiation from wireless energy in the mid-body region. You can view the study below in our reference area. Your laptop also emits two  other kinds of energy (magnetic and electric) If you want to know more about RF and EMF we’ve got a really comprehensive guide with the best ideas to avoid it.  At Safertech are most concerned with wireless because  it’s been around for only a short time, and no one can agree upon how harmful it is—if at all. (We’re leaning towards some)

What You Can Do About It

  • As we say here at Safertech, the best EMF prevention/protection is DISTANCE. Put that laptop on a desk or pillow—12 inches or more away.  We know this because we’ve measured this wireless RF radiation of many laptops in our office and we see the energy consistently drop off to a much lower level at a minimum of 12 inches.

Wire It Baby- All the Way

  • But our favorite recommendation to avoid the RF radiation altogether is is to keep your laptop wired with WiFi and Bluetooth off.
  • Access the internet via an Ethernet cable. I insist my employees do this at work. Plus, your internet will be faster and much more secure. And our entire work-space can be a haven from the massive Laptop RF-Radiation from the wireless energy of 20 devices powered on in one space.
    • Another tip I personally use is utilizing a external keyboard so the CPU is kept at a farther distance. Easy peasy! Use a wired mouse and printer, too—just like we implore you to keep your landline as a healthier option to mobile and cordless phones when at home. Using a wired auxiliary keyboard and wired mouse is a great idea so you don’t have to touch your warm mouse-pad with your finger tips. This heat emanates two other forms of yucky EMF energy: magnetic and electric.
  • Make your stationary laptop set-up as comfy as you can so you aren’t tempted to break away and use your computer wirelessly.

Can’t or Will Not Wire Up?

  • If you really can’t commit to hard-wiring or using a desk or pillow for distance all of the time, this is one of the only times we’d recommend that you use a shield. This is not our favorite option because we’ve personally found shielding 1) only protects you from magnetic energy 2) is problematic because it often doesn’t shield the edges of your device and in some cases, increases/multiplies the bad energy on the perimeter.

If you can’t commit to being “grounded” (as electricians would say), use your laptop on battery instead of using the main power source.  The most potentially harmful and strong EMF energy happens when you are streaming video, so don’t do that—or download your file when the laptop is not near your body.

When it comes to Laptop RF Radiation- Kids Matter Most

  • Children seem to be susceptible to EMF absorption in general, but with laptops especially. Their little bodies are too tiny to be situated properly at a desk and the antenna of a laptop is likely level with their head and chest. Tablets are just as problematic; perhaps even more so because children hold them so close to their bodies. A desktop is a better option for them as the CPU will probably be on the floor away from them. Plus, you can monitor their web usage more for safety reasons.

True Story

During the editorial process of this article, a friend told us a truly worrying story. His wife is six months pregnant with their first child. One recent night, she called him downstairs to show him her belly. She’d been working on the internet and resting her laptop on her belly (Oy vey, I know!) She noticed the baby would start moving vigorously every time she placed the laptop back down on her abdomen, and she wanted her husband to see because she thought it was neat. Luckily, her husband told her to stop and explained the details of laptop RF radiation.  And that, folks, is why Safertech works so hard to bring you preventative education (backed up with scholarly articles) that you can share with your loved ones.

Below is an excerpt from a research article from Dr. Devra Davis entitled, “Why Children Absorb More Microwave Radiation and The Consequences” but you can read the study in its entirety linked below.

Children absorb more MWR than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner and their relative size is smaller. MWR from wireless devices has been declared a possible human carcinogen. Children are at greater risk than adults when exposed to any carcinogen. Because the average latency time between first exposure and diagnosis of a tumor can be decades, tumors induced in children may not be diagnosed until well into adulthood. The fetus is particularly vulnerable to MWR.

Smart Meters: Your EMF Health, Safety and Privacy

Utilities around the country are installing smart meters as fast as they possibly can. There are well over sixty million of them out there already and more are being put in every year—and usually, you won’t even know that yours has been switched out. But you should know. Not only are you going to be saying farewell to your meter reader guy, you’ll also probably be paying more for power every month—some people say it’s a LOT more, because the utility can closely monitor your usage many times during the day, and charge you accordingly. What is a smart meter?

It’s a connected smart device. If you’ve been reading about The Internet of Things, this is one of those things. It’s a small computer with enough power to monitor and control your home’s power and then send messages back to the utility.

 “The SmartConnect digital meters and two-­way communications system enable customers to better understand their energy consumption and more effectively manage their electricity use, thus helping them save energy and better manage their overall energy bill. SmartConnect meters are also equipped to support a home area network (HAN) on the customer’s premises. The HAN enables the meter to provide information into the home and to communicate with HAN-­enabled devices (such as smart thermostats and in­-home displays).”

Isn’t that sweet?  They want you to understand your energy consumption!

How does a smart meter work?

Smart meters can use a variety of Radio Frequency (RF) systems, the ­most popular being what they call a mesh network—one meter sends information to the next, to the next, etc., and then is collected in a centralized hub. That’s a lot of wireless energy going on.

But, you should know . . .

The problem we see is that the meters use a cellular technology that is basically attached to your house. And some reports indicate that these radios are far more powerful than what the FCC typically allows. So as your meter chats with the mothership on and off, all day and night long, some pretty big-time EMF’s are spitting out too. Depending on where your meter is located (e.g. close to bedrooms), you and your kids could be unhealthfully near a device that is shooting intermittent strong bursts of EMF radiation at you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More on the potential health effects a bit later.

What if I live in an apartment?

Well, if you’re unlucky enough to live near that big bank of meters that many complexes have, you’re being blasted by all of them together, all of the time! Yikes!!

And then, there’s the issue of privacy

If the utility knows in granular detail about your energy usage, it would be very easy for them, or some other actor, to figure out when you’re home and when you’re not. Imagine a car quietly driving down your street that can pick up the Smart Meter transmissions and use that to decide which homes to break into!

How powerful is the radiation?

The radiation energy field emitted from smart meters is measured in MicroWatts Per Centimeter Squared (μW/cm2) the typical unit used in America. Keep in mind that smart meter transmissions are not constant, and the readings can fluctuate. In our tests, we used our specially calibrated  EMF Tester from TES.

Also note that EMF testers (EMF meters) can ONLY check the electromagnetic field intensity; this doesn’t tell us if or how the field is affecting us biologically. If you’d like to know more about the topic of polarization, check out the very in depth and enlightening article links below.

We found that for our smart meter, the highest level we found was 56.71 μ W/cm2.

Whoa—this energy is sent 288 times a day!

This smart meter is either sending or receiving information about every 5 minutes and operates on two bands: the 900 megahertz (MHz) band, slightly above those used by some of the cellular telephone carriers, and 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) band, ­the same range where WiFi operates.

Q: Aren’t smart meters as safe as cell phones and WiFi routers?

…Ah, that’s a good question.

Smart meters use radio­ frequency microwave radiation similar to WiFi and cell phones.  At Safertech, we think exposure to this type of RF energy should be managed and limited. I’ve got a quick WiFi Video Demo and a switch to turn it off quick and easy while keeping a healthy distance. The safety of these devices is really questionable. In 2011, the World Health Organization placed this frequency range in the “possible human carcinogen” category.

We believe there is a cumulative effect of exposure so be aware, unlike your cell phone or WIFI router, you are not able to turn off a smart meter, or your neighbors meter, or the related neighborhood utility wireless antennas that communicate in the smart network.

Moreover, the RF radiation from some wireless smart meters is a concern because the radiation is so persistent and powerful. California court documents indicate that each of these meters issues RF radiation pulses averaging about 10,000 times per day, and up to a maximum of 190,000 times per day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! That power level places wireless smart meters among the most powerful RF emitters likely to be present in a residential home.

Turns out, Some People Found Out Smart Meters Don’t Make Them Feel So Good

We came across this research report by Ronald Powell, Ph.D. I reached out to Mr. Powell and he was kind enough to share his up to date research, which I encourage you to read here. Dr. Powell is a retired career U. S. Government scientist. He holds a Ph.D in Applied Physics from Harvard. During his Government career, he worked for the President, the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Now, many do not have any noticeable symptoms when exposed to RF radiation from wireless smart meters. The full health disclosure that everyone should be aware of is that there is growing evidence about the biological effects of being exposed to RF radiation. It makes sense that organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics have expressed concern regarding radiation standards relating to wireless devices. Many in the medical field believe that pregnant women and their unborn children, very young children, teenagers, men of a reproductive age, seniors, and anyone with a chronic health condition are those who are especially high risk of harm from exposure.

Electric fields can affect the electrical communication in your body, such as your brainwaves, or the ability of your neurons to fire and communicate. It can also impede inter­cell communication anywhere in your body. Health problems that can manifest as a result to this type of exposure include…

  • Neurological and behavioral changes
  • Altered cell growth
  • Cell mutations
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cancer

Hey, aren’t we protected by the FCC?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for the regulations that set the Maximum Permitted Exposure (MPE) limits for RF radiation. Unfortunately, the current regulations are based primarily on outdated 1980s thinking, when only the heating effects of RF radiation on the body were considered. Since then, the biomedical research community has demonstrated, in hundreds of published studies, that there are an enormous number of biological effects of concern, entirely aside from heating, and the number of discovered effects continues to grow. So, the concern is that the current FCC regulations are out of date and are too permissive.

There has been legislation proposed in the US House of Representatives to address this issue (H.R. 6358). But even if that legislation becomes law, it will be years before more protective regulations are developed and issued. In the meantime, each of the states in the US is on its own to protect its residents.

How are states and communities handling the smart meter issue?  Well, here’s this from the Golden State:

In California, which got Wireless Smart Meters early (2010), 57 towns, cities, counties, and other jurisdictions have opposed the mandatory installation of Wireless Smart Meters. Of these jurisdictions, 15 of them have banned the installation of Wireless Smart Meters altogether.

The Attorneys General of three states have opposed Wireless Smart Meters because they find that the costs outweigh any claimed financial benefits to the customers.

Here are some excerpts from the State of California Public Utilities Commission regarding Smart Grid Deployment of Smart Meters.

       Regarding Smart Grid Deployment of Smart Meters.
       In January, the California Council of Science & Technology released a report
       assessing the health impacts of RF exposure based on a review of published
       health studies. It found that the FCC standard provides a significant factor of
       safety against thermally induced health impacts of smart meters and that there
       is no clear evidence that additional standards are needed. For non­thermal
       effects, it found that “[g]iven the existing significant scientific
       uncertainty,” no standards are needed at this time.

       However, it suggested that additional research is needed to better understand
       the potential health impacts of non­thermal effects.
       By July 1, 2011, the utilities are expected to file their long­term smart grid
       deployment plans in response to a CPUC order in the smart grid proceeding.
       Much of that smart grid, and the associated benefits, is expected to rely on
       wireless infrastructure extending beyond smart meters”

What can I do about my smart meter?

Common sense may dictate that you keep away from smart meters. Like WiFi, the energy is strongest at the source and then dissipates as you get further away. So, since we really can’t be absolutely sure how this energy affects our minds and our bodies, I think it’s a good idea to relocate furniture, especially beds and cribs, away from the smart meter if you’re worried about being exposed to non­-ionizing radiation.smartmeter-analog-side-by-side

For me,  smart meters seemed unnecessary so we got rid of ours.

You can try to opt out of having a smart meter, and use a older non-­wireless meter (which gives off almost no energy).

I wrote an email to SDGE, my provider, and told them I wanted to opt out. First they sent a letter explaining the safety of smart meters. I replied that I still wanted mine removed because I’m EMF sensitive and I didn’t think the smart meter was a healthy choice for my family.

There was a one time charge to get the analog meter back, and a monthly meter reading service fee.

Check with your utility company. This may or may not be an option in your state.

What if I can’t opt out?

Check with anti-Smart Meter coalitions to see what your options are. I linked a few below for a head-start, but I honestly don’t know the impact they’ve had. In the meantime, keep your beds and main working/living areas at least 6­10 feet away from any smart meter. The amount of RF energy emitted drops significantly the further away you are from the source.
